Why Geese fly in V formation?

Scientists have determined why geese use V-shaped formation when migrating.

It serves two important purposes:

First, it conserves their energy. Each bird flies slightly above the bird in front of him, resulting in a reduction of wind resistance. Thus each goose, flapping its wings, creates an uplift for the goose that follows. The birds take turns being the leader of the “V” front falling back periodically when they get tired to let another leader take that point. In fact, a flock of geese can fly 70 percent farther by adopting the V shape rather than flying in isolation.

Kingdom Principles of Financial IncreaseThe second benefit to the V formation is that each bird has an unobstructed field of vision, allowing flock members to see each other and communicate while in flight. For example, if one bird should become sick or has been injured by some means such as being shot, then, that bird will fall out of formation. This will then result in two other geese falling out with the wounded goose to help and offer protection and will remain until that bird recovers or dies before rejoining another formation to catch up with their group.

It is important to note also that military jets fly in this V formation for the same reasons. Each fighter pilot can see, communicate and help each other while in flight working as a team.

This amazing example in God’s creation can show us something very important about working together. You see, when people in a group decide to each sacrifice a little for the sake of the whole, then the group is better able to accomplish its goal. But when a member wanders away, it is detrimental to the group’s task.

In the body of Christ, each individual Christian is called to sacrifice himself for the betterment of others in the body. They serve at church on Sunday or they give to those in need not for their own good, but for the good of others. If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other when things get rough. So as a Christian, remember to give yourself for the sake of others and build up the body of Christ.
